Dr. Kushner weighs in:

These study findings are consistent with the National Weight Control Registry findings about successful weight losers - that what really works are not gimmicks or silly rules to follow or extreme diets that limit food groups.

Here’s what really worked to help people lose weight in this study:

--They restricted intake of certain high calorie foods.

--They practiced portion control.

--They exercised regularly – the equivalent of a 1 hour brisk walk.

--They ate breakfast daily, usually cereal and milk.

--They weighed themselves weekly.

--To maintain the weight loss, they took action quickly when their weight crept up and changed their behavior to keep the weight from creeping up even more.

@ 10:58am ET on November 2, 2009 This article is so true! That is exactly what I did before I even heard of this site and I have lost 20+ pounds to get down to my goal weight. I think the disciple required for this is the hardest hurdle to overcome but personally, I believe this is the only way for long-term weight loss.
@ 5:27pm ET on November 9, 2009 YES! With a daily food diary you can determine 'where you're at' to know what you are consumming and what you need to cut.
